Scar tissue remediation massage in London

Max Mora, scar tissue remediation massage with castor oil in London

In summary, my scar tissue remediation approach involves:

  • clinical assessment of the scar including space to share the story of the scar

  • massage of the scar using a dry myofascial approach, and then with organic castor oil using specific scar tissue techniques

  • application of a castor oil heat pack

  • full body massage while the heat pack is in place

  • guidance on self-massage and how to do heat packs at home

About scar tissue formation

Scars form as part of the body’s natural healing process after skin has been cut or damaged. This is to restore skin integrity to protect the body from infection and other risks. It’s an important part of recovery after surgery or injury and involves the growth of new tissue made primarily of a protein called collagen.

Scars develop in all shapes and sizes. Sometimes the scar formation process tracks more deeply into the body, adhering to structures beneath the skin layers such as muscles or an internal organ. These adhesions can result in tightness or a pulling sensation below the surface of the scar, and swelling if the scar impedes lymphatic flow. Scar contractures such as those caused by burns can result in tightness and restriction of movement. The good news is that scar tissue remediation can help to soften and mobilise scar tissues through specific massage techniques and the application of gentle heat.

About scar tissue remediation sessions with Max

I offer bespoke scar tissue remediation sessions, which involve assessment and massage of the scar. I use a myofascial approach with no oil, followed by massage with organic castor oil because it contains an amino acid that supports the softening of fibrotic (thickened) tissue. Importantly, these sessions include the holding of a sensitive space for the story of the scar and for emotions that may arise as the scar is worked on. Scar tissue massage is typically followed by the application of a castor oil heat pack, which is in place for the remainder of the session. While the heat pack is in place, holistic massage with scented oils soothes the rest of the body and the mind.

Scar tissue remediation sessions also include education about scar tissue, and guidance on how to self-massage and how to apply castor oil packs at home. While I work with most scars, I have a particular emphasis and experience in working with abdominal and pelvic scars including Caesarian section, hernia repair, and laparoscopy/laparotomy scars, and with chest scars including top surgery and mastectomy.

My sessions are 85 minutes in length (£95) to allow enough time to sink deeply into the experience. While one session can be very beneficial, the most effective scar work is a journey over several sessions rather than a single event.

I arrived for a massage with Max as a collection of different points of tension and pain, and left feeling connected and whole in my body again.
